Boiler thermostat

In the field of climate engineering, the boiler thermostat (often called aquastat) is the vital internal control component of your installation. Unlike the wall-mounted ambient thermostat that manages the comfort of your living room, this spare part integrates into the heart of the heating body or hot water tank (ECS). Its mission? To measure the water temperature in real-time, control the burner, and trigger safety shutdown in case of anomalies. On ExpertByNet, we assist heating professionals and individuals with their repairs through a complete stock of original parts (Atlantic, De Dietrich, Chaffoteaux, ELM Leblanc) and certified alternatives DIFF.

The different technologies of internal thermostats

Replacing a thermal regulation part should not be improvised. Each device (gas, oil, or electric boiler) requires a component with strict characteristics. Our catalog is divided into three families of products:

• The safety limiter (overheating): This is the safeguard of your installation. It instantly cuts off the supply (dry contact) if the water temperature exceeds a critical threshold pre-established at the factory (often 94°C, 105°C, or 120°C depending on the model). Most of our references, such as Siemens or ELM Leblanc models, require manual reset (small central button) after triggering.
• The probe thermostat (insertable): Equipped with a rigid stem (e.g., L300 or L450), it slides directly into the sleeve of the steatite resistor or hot water preparer.
• The capillary thermostat (bulb): Essential when the control organ is distanced from the heating area. The copper bulb captures heat and transmits it to the casing via a capillary tube containing a expanding fluid (standard length of 1.5m to 2m).

When and why to replace the boiler thermostat?

The urgency to replace a boiler thermostat generally arises during repeated safety shutdowns of the device. If your boiler stops frequently, the overheating limiter is either defective or signaling a water circulation issue (sludge, faulty pump). An ohmic value test with a multimeter will confirm if the thermostat itself is burnt out.

How to identify the correct replacement reference?

To order the right boiler thermostat, do not rely solely on the visual aspect. Carefully read the nameplate of the defective part: note the set or cutoff temperature (e.g., 85°C), check if it is a single or double bulb model, and measure the exact length of the capillary. In case of doubt, opt for the exact manufacturer’s reference or a DIFF compatible part specifically validated for your boiler model.
