What are off-peak hours?
On a boiler or water heater, energy consumption must be regulated. To achieve this, its use is limited by avoiding excessive energy consumption during specific hours.
There are 8 off-peak hours per day if you have chosen a plan that includes a peak-off-peak option. To find out the off-peak hours for your building, you can contact your energy supplier.
How to save money with a hot water tank?
The water heater uses electrical energy to heat the water in its tank. It is estimated that an individual uses about 60 liters of heated water per day, whether from the water heater or a boiler.
Using an electric meter with off-peak hours allows you to save money while you are away. Remember to set your electric meter to automatic so it switches from peak to off-peak hours automatically.
Then, make sure to set the correct temperature on the thermostat. Adjust it to around 50 degrees to prevent the growth of bacteria responsible for Legionnaires' disease. Don't forget that "water burns," so it isn't necessary to set a water heater to 70 degrees. Additionally, you will consume more since you are requesting more heat, thus more energy.
How to check if the water heater is working during off-peak hours?
The first thing to do is to check what we discussed earlier (automatic position for the day-night contactor and correct temperature on the adjustment button). Next, verify that the option is clearly stated on your energy bill. If not, contact your electricity supplier to set up the off-peak option.
