The European Ecodesign Directive and Your Heating

2018 is the year of high-efficiency boilers, which are definitively replacing our old installations. What is the impact on our homes? How can we take advantage of the energy savings to be made? We are here to help you better understand this change.

What does the European Ecodesign Directive say?

Since 2015, the European Ecodesign Directive has prohibited the sale of thermal installations that are too energy-intensive and too polluting.
Whether they are gas, oil, or even electric boilers, an energy efficiency of at least 75% is required. In other words, low-temperature boilers are no longer allowed for sale.
A boiler with such a minimum efficiency corresponds to type B1 on the energy label.

Starting in 2018, a new step appears. Thermal appliances with a NOx rate that is too high (56m/kWh) must disappear from the market to make way for high-efficiency boilers. In other words, condensing boilers.
These represent an evolution of low-consumption boilers, with the advantage of being able to reuse the flue gases they emit. Usable heat can be found in the exhaust, which can be used for heating while preventing energy waste.

The Case of Flue Pipes

Hundreds of thousands of collective housing units are not suitable for condensing installations, as the flue pipes are adapted to outdated installations.
Whether it’s shunt pipes or those connected to a collective VMC, 2018 requires all installations to use pipes that comply with the European Ecodesign Directive. In the event that a flue pipe with a vent is already in place, a condensing boiler must be installed.
