OPERATING PRINCIPLE

Water softeners are installed on a cold-water pipe to alter the physical and chemical composition of the water, by reducing the concentration of calcium and magnesium which cause limescale build-up.

Hard water flows through ion-exchange resins (strong cation resins), which exchange calcium and/or magnesium for sodium.

By the time it leaves the appliance, the water no longer causes limescale; it has become ‘soft’.

Their aim is to provide maximum protection against limescale build-up in pipes and appliances. As the water flows through, the resins become saturated with calcium and magnesium.

Regeneration is then required to recharge these resins with sodium ions from a solution of sodium chloride or brine (salt and water), which the water softener draws from the salt tank. This regeneration will be triggered automatically overnight by the control mechanism built into the water softener’s head and can take place in two ways:

- by controlling the volume consumed (volumetric mode),

- by monitoring the elapsed time (timed mode).
