Where to Place an Air Vent or Air Intake?

In a home, it's important to differentiate between a exhaust vent and an air intake.
The former is installed in humid areas (bathrooms, kitchens, usually) and can be either round or square. Round vents are more common today and adhere to specific sizes: either a diameter of 80 mm or 125 mm. These sizes are standardized to avoid installation issues. Corded exhaust vents (or those with a button) allow for the extraction of a greater volume of stale air when pulled. A timing system allows it to return to normal after 30 minutes.
The latter is installed in living spaces such as bedrooms or dining rooms. The air intake allows outside air to circulate in order to refresh the indoor air. It can be self-adjusting (meaning it regulates the incoming air flow) or hygro-adjustable (in which case, it ensures a variable flow based on the humidity level in the room).

Both are essential for the good health of your home, whether it's an apartment or a house: one extracts, the other expels.

How to Seal an Air Vent?

An air vent allows air to circulate and prevents your home from becoming too humid. Humidity damages wallpaper, walls, furniture, and leads to the proliferation of bacteria or dust mites.
In winter, the air coming from the air intakes can be cold. It's also possible that other apartments in the building might be blocked, causing the ventilation system to draw in more air than needed. Nevertheless, it's necessary to keep the air intake open to avoid microbial growth. In fact, it's more common to catch illnesses due to bacteria trapped in an apartment than outside.
Additionally, if you hear doors suddenly slamming, know that your home is not haunted. It’s simply differences in pressure caused by blocked air intakes.
In short, we do not recommend sealing a ventilation component for fear that your home could deteriorate, you might catch bird flu, or you risk having ghost hunters show up at your door.

How to Install a Vent?

To install an exhaust vent, simply insert it into the duct hole when mounted in a wall position or with a 3-prong plasterboard sleeve (or a slab crossover sleeve) when it's on the ceiling. The part with the grille should face the interior of the dwelling, while the part with the gasket should fit the cavity.
The air intake consists of an interior part and an exterior part. The wall is in between. They are screwed on from above the ventilation hole. The interior component is called the air intake and has a flap that opens according to the necessary air and ambient humidity. The exterior component is called the facade cap and prevents a gaping hole from being visible from outside.

Why is My Air Intake Noisy?

There are two potential scenarios:
If the noise resembles a jackhammer, it's likely that your air intake is malfunctioning. This issue may arise when there’s a design problem with the air intake, especially if it's installed on a window or patio door with a roller shutter.
On the other hand, if you live in a noisy area, know that a standard air intake does not help reduce sound. Unless it is considered acoustic. In this case, the decibel information listed in the product description does not correspond to the audible sound level in a room but rather the number of decibels reduced from the outside. For instance, an air intake in an environment of 91 decibels reducing by 41 decibels means that your room will be subject to 50 decibels.
